(ARCHIVE) Gibson SG Standard Olive Drab 2021

- Guitarchives
Gibson SG Standard, olive drab green, made in USA 2021. This was made a couple of years ago as part of an exclusive run for USA guitar behemoths Chicago Music Exchange. As such, it's got a fun little mish-mash of specs: small '61 style tortoise shell guard, 70s style small block inlays and big headstock, plus a handful of different exclusive colours, including one of Gibson's coolest ever offerings; olive drab. As such, the thing looks like a million bucks: those classic curves always deliver, but dang, this is next level. The real MVP on this guitar is the exclusive pickups: the 'T-type' humbuckers, which are a remake of the 'T-Top' pickups that were the stock pickup for the SG from around 1969-74. They're a standard alnico V magnet, underwound with a average value around 7.2k ohms, and using an unusual polyurethane coated wire. Jimmy Page famously used a T-Top in the bridge position of his '59 LP for many years, which is part of how he managed to achieve such a full, thick crunchy sound that was still balanced, articulate and clear. It sounds great: shimmering note separation, creamy fatness, snarly bite. Needless to say, you've got one shot: I couldn't find another one for sale in the world at time of writing, let alone here in Australia. "Hey grandma, is there olives in it?" - Metalocalypse
