History ZPB-1R, snow white, made in Japan 2006. History is a house brand for major Japanese instrument chain Shimamura, who have stores all over Japan. They're made at the legendary Fujigen Gakki plant, the very same factory that made all those famous Fender Japan guitars from 1982-96 as well as producing Ibanez Prestige and excellent instruments. This is a really tasty P-style bass. It's got a beautifully made neck with a streaky rosewood board and and some attractive maple on the back, carved to a slim C and finished in thin satin that's worn to a superbly slick feel. The nut width is 40mm, so about halfway between a regular J and a regular P, which is a really intuitive size. The body is lightweight and resonant and well balanced against the neck.. it's quick and agreeable in the hands. Plugged-in, you get a slightly scooped, slightly hot take on the classic-P punch. There's heaps of scope in the tone knob, so you can get a gooey warm motown tone with the treble rolled off a little. Otherwise, max it out and add a bit of overdrive for a very convincing thick, creamy rock sound. This is a very similar spec set to Fender Japan PB70, and made at the same place, but for around $500A less cash. These are a staff favourite around here, and even though we are a bunch of idiots, the bass is actually very good.
