Zenkai Tele style Partscaster, made in Hobart Australia 2021, vintage blonde finish. Zenkai is the project of Hobart-based luthier Alex Caffrey, who does a lot of our store repair work and learned his trade at longstanding Brisbane institution Tym Guitars. There's a comprehensive list of the parts used below, but let's talk about the body and neck. First up, the neck is an Allparts Japan roasted quarter-sawn maple soft-V, which looks superbly dark and mysterious. It's hand-finished in tru-oil and sits beautifully in the hand, plus it's just about as stable as you could possibly ask for by nature owing to it's construction. The body is by MJT, who are famed for their high quality workmanship and relic-style finishes. It's super light for an ash Tele at 3.2kg, so that translates to a resonant and lively feel in the hands. The tone on deck is satisfying: punchy, percussive attack with a singing top end and an a weighty bass, perfect for bug open rhythm parts or twangy lead lines. The details have been well-considered too: compensated brass saddles, reverse-style control plate plate, staggered tuners... Alex is pretty particular apparently, but you stand to benefit from his peculiarities. A quick note on the headstock decal: it's on top of the finish and could be easily peeled off if you prefer. Tasty stuff!
