North East is the project of guitar maker Matthew Slager, producing unique instruments from local timbers from his home near Scottsdale in NE Tasmania. This build takes the classic T shape, but adds some round edged and an access heel join for comfort, a modern six saddle bridge for easy adjustments and a pair of P-90 style pickups to pep up the party. The neck is a slim soft V, carved from Tasmanian blackwood, which looks amazing and has the added bonus of being very dense and rigid. The neck has a certain reassuring solidness in the hand, and plays very smoothly all the way up. The pickups dole out the goods: heaps of punch in the attack, sparkly expansive highs, open airy mids and a fast, tuneful low end. The oak top has plenty of tasty twists and turns on display in the grain, all on show under the thin natural finish.
