Fender debuted their Squier brand in 1982, made in Japan at the excellent Fujigen Gakki factory alongside the newly minted Fender Japan line. The first couple of years of Fendewr instruments from Japan bore a JV serial number, for Joint Venture or Japan Vintage, depending on who you ask. When the first JVs landed back at Fender's Fullerton factory HQ, the response was immediate: these guitars felt like Fenders from the 50s and 60s; they're made how they were always meant to be. This example dates to 1983, and was the highest end vintage style Strat in the Squier line-up at the time. It's been re-wired and the bridge block and tuners have been replaced, as well as having some kind of home relic job applied to the finish, so it's priced as a relative bargain accordingly. The relic job is mostly just sanding the gloss off the top layer, it's minor and nothing to worry about really. The good stuff is still there: original pickups, classy alder body and a wildly good neck. JV enthusiasts will know what I mean about the neck: it's kinda perfect. It's carved to a sensible slim vintage C shape from some very tight and consistently grained maple and a dark, ochre streaked rosewood slab fretboard, and it feels like a million bucks. The tone is fantastic: super percussive and immediate down low, smooth and creamy through the mids with a whole lot of harmonic complexity, and chirpy and clear on the top. This sounds and plays better than many vintage USA made Strats, it's very impressive. The neck is clean and smooth in the hands, dimples and rub wear on the back.
