Sachar Amos Custom WBS-1015 Weissenborn Natural 2006
Sachar Amos Weissenborn, made in Australia 2006, gloss natural. Sachar Amos is an Australian luthier based in the Dandenong Ranges, 35km east of Melbourne. He completed a four year apprenticeship under master violin maker John Ferwerda, as well further studu in Ireland under stringed instrument maker Paul Doyle. He now offers restoration and custom builds across a few instrument genres, including guitars and violins, as well as specialising in classical guitars made in the style of the 19th century Spanish masters. He also, now and again, takes commissions to build unusual stringed instruments, like this one. This is an acoustic lap steel guitar, made with the square hollow neck in the style pioneered in the 1920s by Hermann Weissenborn in LA, USA. The body and neck are made from gorgeous Victorian blackwood, which looks and sounds great. The grain lines and colouring is similar to the almost unobtainable Hawaiian koa,, with fine detail, shimmering flame figuring and a gorgeous rich ochre red hue. The tone is similar to koa too, with a defined midrange bite, open highs and a subtle, tuneful bass. It's an excellent wood choice for a lap steel, with a fast and clear voice that brings lines to life in vivid detail. If you ordered a new example built to this spec today by Sachar, you could expect to pay $5-6k and wait many months for completion, so this is a very handy pickup if you've been on the hunt for something special.
