Bacchus Twenty Four Alder Custom White 2005
Bacchus Twenty Four, white, made in Japan 2005. Back in the early 00s, Bacchus was a small enough operation that you could order a custom variation on their catalog models, and they would make it at their Aska workshop completely by hand. This is a Twenty Four model: approximately Jazz Bass flavoured, but with 24 frets, a generous taper on the neck for articulate playing up high, an easy access six-bolt join, fancy Warwick-style bridge and tailpiece and a simple active preamp. The first thing you'll notice in the hands is that it's super light: 3.6kg is light for a Strat or Tele, let alone a full scale bass. It's super well balanced and amazingly loud and responsive unplugged too. The neck is great: comfy and quick and evidently made with a lot of care and skill. The controls are cool: passive volume and balance, plus a switchable active boost for bass and treble, so there's a lot of possibilities on tap. It's a clear, fast, articulate tone, with impressive balance across the strings and up and down the neck. The white finish is super thin, it's showing a bit of rub wear around the place but will surely look all the better once you've put another thousand hours on it. This is so much bass for the cash it's silly.
