Aria TSB-650 Thor Sound, walnut finish, made in Japan 1982. First up: surely THOR SOUND is the best heckin' name for a bass ever, right? In the early eighties, Aria was owned by the same crowd as the famed Matsumoku factory, and these kinda seem like an excuse for them to show off just how well they can build an instrument. The neck-through construction lends this a huge amount of natural sustain and resonance; it's a super friendly neck that's held up perfectly through the decades. The body is ash, with some outrageously tasty grain (anyone else seeing the eye of Sauron in that top half?) with the five ply walnut-maple neck striping through the middle; it's a cool look. Being a medium scale with slim neck and relatively light in weight, this is an absolute breeze to play. The tone is awesome: heaps of attack and grit with an aggressive but choral midrange. The 'sound switches' act like a coil-split, so you can get a mire mid-heavy grinding HB style tone or a plucky, more scooped single coil kinda thing; both awesome to hear. This is surely a stellar piece of craftsmanship and will make some intergalactic demigod very happy indeed.
