Bacchus JRP Surf Breaker, worn blue, made in Japan 2022. In the early 2020s, the city of Matsumoto in western Japan had an issue: a bunch of the Japanese red pine trees that proudly decorated the city had fallen prey to an insect infestation, and had to be felled.  The Nagano prefecture in Japan has a long history of woodwork, including many famous guitar makers, with Bacchus' parent company Deviser among them. Deviser acquired a small stash of wood of these friendly old red pines, which owing to the insect bites had interesting knobs, marks and small holes in them, and created a series of guitars: the JRP series, named for the timber. They only made twenty of each model and finish, so this is one of twenty, but it has unique pocks, dents and marks owing to the nature of the wood. The body shape is so cool: Jazzmaster-ish, but with the always awesome German carve around the outside and a swish half-guard. The hardware choices are pragmatic: Gotoh tuners and a half cut Tele-style bridge with compensated saddles, and simple electronics. The pickups are by USA winder Mojotone, aimed to replicate the 'Beano' 1959 LP Burst owned by Sir Eric, and they've very good: hairy and full with dirt, singing clarity and shimmer clean. The neck is very enjoyable too, with a moderate C shape carved from some very carefully selected rock maple and African blackwood. The matching headstock is the icing on the cake: holy crapola, this is crazy cool. I've been hoping to score one of these since they came out, but they're hard to score for a reasonable dime: you've got one shot, don't count on seeing another one anytime soon!
