Crews KTR TN-01, natural mahogany finish, made in Japan 2017. It's no secret around here that we really love Crews stuff, and this... oh boy friends, this rules. The Key to the Rock series, or KTR, is a collaboration between the Crews workshop, the Terada Gakki factory and Musicland Key, a major music retailer in Japan. They offer updated takes on some classic models, all executed to eye-wateringly high standards. We've had a couple of 50s and 60s style solid body Tele-style offerings through, but this is the first Thinline-style offering we've managed to score. Referencing the first generation 1969 Thinline, this beauty was blessed with a maple board, the swoopy guard, simple controls and a mahogany body. In a couple of Crews-specific touches, you get a 210mm (8.26") radius neck for easy movement and bends and their lovely 'cloudy lacquer' semi-gloss nitro finish, as well as a gorgeous pair of pickups made just for this limited model. It feels fantastic: the natural resonance is extraordinary and the unplugged volume is exemplary, and the neck feels very classy and comfy. The tone is equally delightful. The neck humbucker is rich and syrupy, with a dark voice by default but plenty of life and zing when you dig in hard. The bridge single coil is fat and creamy through the midrange, with a great balance of slicing top end and harmonic richness through the mids. It's truly no exaggeration to say this is better in terms of feel and tone, in my humble opinion, than many Fender Custom Shop examples I've laid hands on. Someone is going to be so happy with this, it's so good. Life is grand.
