Music Man Stingray 4, natural velvet finish, made in USA 1996. The Stingray is one of those basses that always works. This one is a 'velvet' finish: it's a super smooth satin natural finish on the body and a pretty early example of an oil+wax finish on the neck. It looks superb: the ash features some beautiful grain and with a few years of play and mellowing, this is a surely a classy creature. It's nice and light, which is a huge bonus on a Stingray, plus... the neck is a dream. It's very slick on the hand and setup nice and low, so you're never fighting it to get your notes out, plus, it's wearing some beautiful birdseye maple grain. The tone is classic Stingray: punchy low end, warm but aggressive, heaps of growl and snap through the mids, zesty treble. The EQ is powerful, so you can dial in an appropriate level of stank for any occasion. These 'Velvet' models don't come around often, plus the less-common rosewood board adds a little extra fatness to the equation, so... make an honest bass out of it, yes?
