Ernie Ball Music Man Stingray EX, black sparkle, made in Japan circa 2001. At first glance, this appears to be a regular USA made Stingray, and indeed, the pickup, preamp, tuners, bridge etc were all made in USA. The body and neck, however, were made in Japan in the ESP factory, and then assembled with the USA parts. These were sold to the Japan domestic market for a few years from around 1998-03, and while they seldom pop up outside Japan, they enjoy a strong reputation for quality over there and sell for almost as much as a USA example on the used market. This one sounds great: typical Stingray growl and snap through the highs and mids, plenty of beef and weight in the low end... equally happy in a range of different contexts. The black sparkle is awesome, it's sure to look superb on stage and adds a little whisker of glam to the otherwise classic aesthetic. The neck is a gorgeous piece of maple and the body is on the lighter side, so this pops in the hands. Overall: it's a great Stingray, with a certain nerdy chíc to impress/confuse your friends.
