Fender Aerodyne Jazz Bass, modded to fretless, vintage white, made in Japan 2007-10. Well... that's different! The Aerodyne J is a cult favourite among players; the lightweight carved and bound body, slick neck and P/J setup has won many hearts worldwide. The reverse-tuxedo creamy white look of this one is a sure-fire stunner; they're far less common than the black/grey offerings around and really does look the goods. There's an obvious modification: it has no frets. When this arrived, the frets had been removed and the gaps filled; it was structurally sound and played well, but the board looked a little untidy with some white filler on show in the gaps where the frets were. Our local ninja-luthier added a veneer to the fingerboard, which now looks and feels exceptionally classy; the work is absolutely outstanding. The P/J pickup combo works brilliantly with the fretless board, it's great to be able to roll in the thump from the P-pickup and the definition and growl from the J-single; the tonal possibilities are both wide and attractive. If you're keen to mix genres, reference Saint Jaco and turn some heads, this is the weird and wonderful friend you need in your life.
