Fender AVRI '62 Jaguar, black on black, made in USA 2004. The American Vintage line offered vintage-correct takes on golden era Fender models, and enjoyed long critical and popular acclaim following their release in 1982. The offset examples are a bit trickier to find than the Strats or Teles, and when you do see a Jag, nine times out of ten it's sunburst, or occasionally candy apple red. To score a black one is very fun. The previous owner switched the original tort guard for a black one, which looks outstanding in the flesh. The classic curves of the jag hit a bit different in black, and with the cream pickup covers and the generous dose of chrome, this is in a class all it's own for style. The neck is a comfy vintage C shape, and once we dialed the setup in just right, it feels awesome in the hands. The tone on offer is classic Jag stuff: jangle and chime for days on the lead circuit, or thick swampy thwack on the rhythm circuit. There's a pleasing balance and weight to the tone, with plenty of assertive juicy fundamental note clarity and a great airy openness through the treble. This includes the original guard, bridge cover, mute plate, tremolo arm, case and documents. Fun fact: only 11% jaguars, South America's biggest feline and apex predator, have the genetic variation that makes them black.
