Fender '62 Jazz, charcoal burst, made in Japan 1989. Just stop for a minute and have a look at this... whoa. The charcoal burst (CCB) finish basically involves the famed Fujigen luthiers burning a specially selected American basswood body with a blowtorch, then sealing it all up with a coat of vintage natural poly. CCB was only ever offered as a catalog finish on Telecaster models; those Teles are starting to fetch crazy cash as word gets around about the quality of early Fujigen Fender models and the quirky uniqueness of each one; as the burn marks were never the same twice. According to the neck pocket, this was a one off customer order. I've certainly never come across another Fender bass in this finish anmywhere in the world, for sale, sold or otherwise... if this isn't a one-off, it can't be far from it. The body species was chosen specially for these finishes; the wide and definite grain lines complement the subtle scorch marks perfectly. The whole thing has a certain majesty to it; it's got a rich toffee hue that radiates class. Aside from looking stunning and being extremely collectable, this absolutely brings the goods in the feel and tone department. The original pickups deliver an articulate, thick growl with a snappy attack and heap of body. The slim, round neck has weathered it's three decades almost without a mark; it's a joy in the hands and features a very pretty piece of rosewood. I'm willing to wager this is the only example of this finish on a '62 Jazz for sale anywhere in the world, so if you like it, don't wait for the non-existent next one!
