Fender Mustang, faded surf green, made in Japan 1987. It's easy being green; that's what they say! This eye catching little number is certainly one to write home about. The colour could be described as 'Shrek green', or 'smashed avo', or 'wasabi green'... this is the colour that everyone's favourite 'surf green' (SGR) goes with a few decades of yellowing on the clock. It really does look awesome; the way it's faded slightly unevenly and rubbed to satin in the high-contact areas give it a depth and majesty that new guitars can only dream of. Aside from looking great, this brings the A-game in many other ways. The early Fujigen-era Fender guitars are famous for outstanding wood selection and impeccable craftsmanship, and it takes all of five seconds of having this in your hands to feel all the love, care and precision that's gone into the build... the neck especially is a delight. There's a spanky thickness to the tone; it's got a sweet balance of heft and sparkle and really comes alive when hit hard and played with a bit of gusto. The Mustang first appeared in the Fender Japan catalog in 1987 and was produced in fairly minuscule numbers until the mid 90s when grunge took off, so similar to the Jag and Jazzmaster, scoring a Mustang with an historical E/A/JV serial number like this is an extremely neat trick. I suspect this is the only example of this model in this finish from this era that's going to pop up for sale anywhere in the world for quite some time, so if you like it, you better 'put a ring on it'.

Cosmetic condition notes: minor finish wear. Headstock has a minor mark on the bottom edge and a sticker that was a bit too cute too remove. The The neck is pretty clean. The back has some little round scratch marks on the top horn, a couple of little dents on the back edge, a couple of very small scratches and some uneven fading from the years. The sides have no major marks, just a few little scuffs on the top horn, shoulder area, near the rear strap pin and around from knobs. The front is pretty clean, just some very minor dimples on the back edge near the strap pin, a nick near the jack, some rub wear behind the bridge, some play wear on the guard and top horn and some rub wear and uneven fading on the finish. Quite frankly it looks superb. Overall: very good condition (8/10).

Playing condition notes: Action is low, intonation is good, neck is straight, truss rod works. All electrics tested and working properly. Frets have some minor wear but are in great shape, 8/10 for life left. Wearing fresh 11/49s.

This listing is an archived entry. We love to look back and remember fondly what characters we've had through the store, so we keep them around for reference.
