Fender Tele Deluxe, black, crafted in Japan 2004-5. This is one of those guitars that often gets talked about but is seldom seen. The Deluxe is the third point in the alternative-Tele triangle, alongside the Tele Custom and Tele Thinline; it's by far the rarest of the three as it was only a catalog model from around 1986-91. This one is a later model, part of a limited run produced around 2005. You get some cool features: a big 70s headstock with Schaller F-key tuners, maple board, ash body and a pair of Wide-Range style humbuckers with LP-esque electronics. The white-on-black tuxedo finish on this is supremely cool; it really balances upmarket suave with pirate swagger perfectly. It's an easy player: slim neck, moderately weighted, body contour in the back, springy and bright in the hands. The real magic happens when you plug it in: the humbuckers really sing. There's a sublime balance of clarity and punch; every pickup position sounds superb. This is the first one of these we've ever scored in several years, so don't hesitate too long if you like it as it might be a while before another one pops up.
