Fender Mustang, black, made in Japan 2012. Now, we love Fender Japan Mustangs around here, and we've moved plenty of them over the years. This is only the second time ever that we've scored the elusive MG77 model, and the first time in black. The '65, '66 and '69 models are pretty easy to get, but these... go find another one anywhere if you can! There's some classic Mustang features: cute small size lightweight offset body, cheeky tremolo, phase slider switches, skinny neck with a 40mm nut. But, this one has an ash body and a maple fretboard. The maple board and bold black logos make for a cool aesthetic, it's a brasher and less cutesy take on the classic curves. The ash body and maple board combine for a more focused, bright, snappy tone. The sound could be described as a midway point between the classic Mustang dark punchy spank and the chiming, open Tele-style twang. The added articulation and sparkle make for some really enjoyable lead tones and bring out the nuance and detail in your playing. It still loves a generous dose of gain too. We've had a fair few late 70s USA made Mustang examples through the shop toom and this is a bit awkward to say, but... in terms of build quality, this is better. The neck pocket is perfectly tight, the fretwork is perfect, the finish is even and crisp, the neck is perfectly straight; it's very well executed indeed. So, if you miss this one, it might be a couple of years before we get another one, so don't dither!
