Fender Boxer Strat, black, made in Japan 1986-7. The Boxer Series was Fender's 'modern feature' offering in the mid 80s; later replaced by the Pro Feel series. There were medium scale options, HH Strats, things with Floyd Rose trems (yeah... except nah thanks) and this little handy friend. Being not a strict vintage reissue, you get some handy modern features like an HSS pickup setup, two knobs instead of three, satin finish neck and some handy block saddles, all dressed to kill in black-on-black. 80s-era Fujigen-made Fender stuff has a great reputation for playability, and this is a great example: it feels terrific. The neck is slim and quick and carved from some gorgeous tightly grained maple and dark rosewood, and it's been well played in and feels extremely satisfying. The pickups are great too: simple, but awesome. The single coils are clear and glassy with a nice creamy midrange growl. The humbucker is smooth and fat with plenty of midrange kick, it's super practical. The black finish has a few knocks and marks, which adds to the read-to-roll aesthetic and sound of the whole package. If you like your Strats understated but hyper-playable, here's your new workhorse.
