Fender Jazz Bass, natural gloss, made in USA 1976. The Jazz Bass debuted in 1962, with a slick new offset body and a pair of 8-pole single coil pickups, and was an instant hit. Fast-forward a new years, and the model evolved into this bristling beast: bold logos, maple board, block inlays, ash body, repositioned bridge pickup, and the three-bolt neck plate. This is so perfectly 70s, I can imagine Larry Graham, Marcus Miller or Adam Clayton plucking this one off the shelf new a few decades back. The neck is slim at the nut, but with a generous D profile in the back, which feels very sturdy and instantly familiar. Some of these 70s ash body models weigh a tonne, but at 4.5kg, this is pretty moderate. The sound plugged in is glorious: fat, wide, punchy and full. The neck pickup abounds in lows and lower midrange, offering a golden round plumpness that will underpin a band mix perfectly. The bridge pickup has a generous midrange snarl and clacky top end snap, so you can mix that in for a super articulate, fast and funky sound. The original finish has faded, checked, rubbed and dinged up, but it's in pretty good shape for a bass that turns fifty next year. The original case is a great inclusion and worth a decent sum on it's own. This is extremely cool, it's a perfect example from an iconic era.
