Fender JMJ Mustang Bass, black, made in Mexico 2023. Justin Meldal-Johnsen has covered a lot of ground in his illustrious career, with some big credits as a bassist and MD for Beck, St Vincent and more. This is a great bass, there's a lot to love. The basic format is taken from a mid sixties Mustang bass, so you get the cool short 30" scale, a slim neck, vintage-style bridge and the trad split mini single coil pickup. There's a couple of fun more modern additions to the mix too: a 9.5" radius, a thumb rest and a cool pre-worn nitro finish. It adds up nicely in the hands: the lightweight body is perfectly weighted, the neck is comfy and effortless and the tone just works. Plugged in, it's thick, thumpy and round with a short sustain, perfect for indie, surf or punk stuff. It came in wearing flatwounds, so we left those on as that matched the vibe perfectly. This has a bit more pizzazz and mojo than other short scale models kicking around, so nab yourself a winner while it's going.
