Fender Johnny Marr Jaguar, black, made in USA 2016. This is a cool Jag, made as part of a limited run for Chicago Music Exchange in an exclusive black finish. Johnny made his name with sadboi legends The Smiths, but has done stints with The Pretenders, Modest Mouse and a bunch of others, and is widely regarded to be a brilliant player and writer. The model is based off his 1965 Jag, modded to solve all the the issues, so you get a good dose of pragmatic good sense on the spec sheet. Mustang saddles on the bridge, nylon sleeves around the bridge posts, a taller trem arm, fun Bare Knuckle pickups and custom wiring with a four way switch and a pair of 'bright' slider switches. The mods eliminate some common issues like string slippage and a wobbly bridge, and gives you a more useful set of tonal options than the stock vintage style offering. It sounds brilliant: slicing treble with a glassy clarity, with a vibrant midrange and an understated low end that's tight and punchy. The series/parallel options available via the 4-way blade switch are fun too, the middle position is always my favourite on a Jag and to have a more shimmery or a more fat option is fun. It's a guitar that will sit on top of a mix perfectly, it has that jangly juiciness that will always find space in a band setting. These are around in white or red, but not really in black, so hey, you know the drill: one shot.
