(ARCHIVE) Fender Mustang Aged Olympic White 1977

- Guitarchives
Fender Mustang, olympic white, made in USA 1977. This clearly has seen some things in it's time; it's got the scars to show it! Olympic white is one of those finishes that takes punishment really well, this really has a lot of charm owing to it's many bruises. Late 70s Mustangs feature an ash body, which is quite different in tone to the 60s era poplar bodies or the MIJ reissues made of basswood. The ash adds mass and lends the guitar a thick, strong midrange and some extra definition and cut; pushing it slightly closer to Strat-territory. The maple board adds some brightness to the equation, as well as looking very well played-in. The neck on this is very slim and round, it's very easy to wrap your hands around, and combined with the short scale, this is a breeze to play. Mustangs are perfect for brisk, choppy rhythm parts and stanky, brazen riffs; they do surf, grunge and punk better than just about anything. If you're after a highly collectable, mint-condition case-queen, look elsewhere; but if you're after a pirate-punk-booty-shaking-machine with swagger to spare, this one will surely rattle some bones.
Model: Fender Mustang
Made: USA, Fullerton plant, 1977 (serial S716734)
Finish: olympic white
Body: ash (approx total guitar weight 3.9kg)
Neck: maple with maple board, 24" scale
Mods: strap pins replaced
Pickups: original Fender MG-singles
Case: high quality gig-bag
Cosmetic condition notes: moderate to heavy finish wear. There's some pretty major chips as visible in the pics: top edge, around the rear strap pin, bottom edge around from the knobs, bottom horn, middle of the back. There's some uneven fading from long-since-removed stickers, a bunch of minor scratches/dings/marks. The crack showing on the neck-pocket is only in the finish, not in the body wood. Board and headstock have some proper discolouration, back of the neck has a lot of play wear and a few marks. Basically it's got 40 years of punk under it's belt! Overall: fair condition (5.5/10)
Playing condition notes: Action is low, neck is straight, intonation is good, truss rod works. All electronics tested and working properly. Frets have some normal wear inc. minor pitting, they're fairly even with sufficient height left to dress and no current major buzz issues, 5/10 for life left. Wearing fresh 11/49s, ready to roll!
