Fender AVRI '59 Strat, faded sonic blue, made in USA 2013. Oh boy, this is a very good guitar. Around 2012, Fender did a little re-boot of their widely acclaimed American Vintage series, which included changing the finish to their 'thin skin' nitro style coat, different pickup offerings and some models with clay dot fretboard markers. Alongside the first version of the Eric Johnson Strat, they're widely regarded to be among the best instruments Fender has made in a long time. The finish looks amazing: it started off life as a pale blue, but it's faded up to a gorgeous minty green with plenty of checking lines and minor play wear. The previous owner switched the guard for a white model, as the original mint guard (included!) is basically exactly the same hue as the body now... but hey, the white against the streaky rosewood board and seafoam green looks nice and crisp. The neck is big: it's a fat, round 'baseball bat' style shape, which will suit some players better than others, but if you're in for it, the extra mass definitely adds a little bit of pizzaz and crispness to the tone. The tone, oh heck: it sounds amazing. It's clear and sparkly on the top with an eloquent, sweet voice, with a fat, creamy, weighty low end. The midrange is wide and warm, with a vocal-esque expressiveness that responds nicely to a subtle touch. This one includes the original case and docs, which is handy. You could spend a tonne more on a Strat and get a guitars that's not nearly this convincing as this... it just rules.
