Gibson ES-339, made at Memphis USA 2014, gloss black. The 339 is a modern classic: it debuted in the mid 2010s to critical and popular acclaim. The recipe is pretty simple: take the iconic Gibson ES-335, and make it fun size. A typical 335 body is around 41cm across at the widest point, whereas this a whisker under 36cm... two inches smaller and around half a kilo lighter. Gibson were making these at their now-closed Memphis plant, which also housed their Custom Shop, and was experiencing none of the quality-control wobbles that the bigger Nashville plant. The build and finish quality is great, with little details like fret nibs, the pearl inlaid logo and perfect binding all hinting at the class on offer. These are most common in cherry red, but the gloss black looks unreasonably suave. Those curves, the cream and chrome accents... dang. The previous owner swapped the pickups for a pair of Lollar Imperial Low-Wind humbuckers, which I would say means they've really done you a favour. Lollar do some of the finest boutique hand-wound pickups on offer anywhere, and these are supremely sweet. The neck pickup is percussive and rich, with a bodacious low end and a lingering sustain. The bridge pickup is clear and crisp, but fat and full at the same time, with Tolstoy-grade complexity and nuance. At time of listing, it appears a new example of this model is not currently available in the country, even if you had the $6k burning a hole in your pocket. So hey, rob me while I'm still a simpleton and take this off my hands.
