Gibson Midtown Standard P-90, wine red, made in USA 2012. The Midtown might not be the most famous Gibson semi-hollow, but they enjoy a good reputation amongst enthusiast for their comfy body size, easy neck and snappy tone. This version with a pair of tasty P-90 single coils was only made for a couple of years and is certainly exceptionally cool. The body is a similar size to an ES339, so it's a couple of centimetres shy of a full 335 in width, but made from a chambered slab of mahogany with a flat mahogany top. That lends it a thick, warm and weighty tone with heaps of rich low mids and natural bass. The P-90s add a certain sparkle to the top end and an immediacy to the attack, complementing the body perfectly for a nicely nuanced and very balanced tone. It's not dissimilar to a tasty Les Paul, but with a certain airiness and snap lent by the hollow wings. The finish looks gorgeous too: that dark, rich wine red is luxurious and pops perfectly against the dark rosewood board and cream plastics and binding. The neck is a comfy moderate shape and was made with more precision and love than other recent Gibson models we've seen; it feels really reassuring in the hands. I expected to enjoy this, but I really do like it a lot. You will too, I'd wager.
