Gibson SG Junior, satin canary yellow, made in USA 2006. This is such an exceptionally cool guitar. Back in the day, Gibson's Japan distributor Yamano would order limited runs of unusual models in fun finishes for the Japan market. These would have to pass both the standard USA quality control process as well as a notoriously rigorous extra QC schedule on arrival in Japan lest they be sent back to the USA for another try, so the 'Yamano Gibsons' are rightly revered for exceptional build quality. They did these '66 style SG Juniors with the cool 'batwing' guard in pink, blue and yellow. This feels awesome in the hands: it's light and super lively with great balance and no neck dive, the neck is arrow-straight and super comfy and it rings like a bell at the lightest touch. Plugged in, you get an aggressive punchy midrange with oodles of attack and presence, balanced by a sweetness and clarity on the top end you never get from a humbucker... P-90s are so glorious in the right guitar, and this is definitely the right guitar. The yellow finish is lighter and cheekier than the standard TV yellow you see on LP Juniors, it's got a real lemon cheesecake quality to it and looks all the better for a little but of honest play wear around the edges. We scored one of these around three years ago and have been hankering for another one ever since, and finally... it's here. It might well be the last one we ever manage to score, so don't dither if you're keen.
