Gibson SG-X, black, made in USA 1999. An SG with one pickup, tune-o-matic/stoptail combo and a single humbucker? Yes, yes, yes. The SG-X was only made for a couple of years, which is a bit of a shame really. This one is wearing a fetching coat of satin black nitro, complete with plenty of checking, sticker fade marks, natural play wear and various scuffs and scrapes. The Junior-style guard is a great addition, it ties it all together perfectly. The tune-o-matic bridge means this is easy to intonate and adjust, it's a more robust and reliable option than the wraparound style bridge you get on a Junior. The neck feels great: it's pretty slim at the nut end, but widens considerably as you get up the top end, which is great for fast and precise lead work. At 2.8kg, this is very light, but it balances very nicely and feels sturdy and reassuring in the hands. The single pickup delivers the goods: it's fat, snarly and full, with heaps of midrange punch. Into a Marshall, it's just... perfect. I really like this one, it's a very fun guitar. X marks the spot.
