Greco EG700, made in Japan 1977, cherry sunburst. This model is Greco's take of the classic Les Paul Standard, and it's exceptionally good. The '700' in the model number means that in it's day, this sold for ¥70,000, almost double the cost of the basic model, which if you convert to 2018 dollars is really quite a hefty sum. The upmarket model means you get the good stuff: Greco's own U-2000 humbuckers, unchambered mahogany body, premium grade maple top, bound fretboard with the nice 'nibs' on the frets, strong long-tenon neck joint, proper mother-of-pearl inlays and deluxe kidney-bean tuners. All that adds up to an LP that'll seriously scare the majority of Gibsons; it's very convincing to the hands and ears. The slim neck and tidy fretwork make for easy playing and movement, it's very cooperative under the fingers. The pickups dole out a perfect LP-crunch; there's plenty of definition and cut, balanced with a thick richness and body to the lows and mids. The top is really quite stunning; there's some birds-eye on the lower half and some lovely tight lines along the top half, it's a unique and mesmerising example of why plain maple is frequently more fun than flame maple. With 40+ years of stories and tunes on the clock, this has a mojo you just don't get with a new guitar; not to mention the quality of timber which is in a different league to modern offerings... this is sure to ignite some dreams!
