Gretsch 6128-1957 Duo Jet, black, made in Japan in 2003. This has a certain verve, it's a very attractive item indeed. The Duo Jet hasn't changed a lot since it's debut in 1953, and looking at this one, it's easy to see why. The sleek lines, carved top, hump inlays, double binding and Bigsby trem emanate a certain class. As with all high end Gretsch stuff made since 1989, this was made at the renowned Terada factory. The build quality is exceptional, the details are bang-on and it has a pleasing integrity in the hands. The chambered body and fairly slim round neck make for a lively and comfortable feel, and despite all the hardware, it's still lighter than most LPs. The Dynasonic pickups are deep and rich, with a pounding natural bass that lends weight and fullness to chords and lead lines. There's plenty of breath through the midrange and a tidy sweet top end, but the natural fatness is what makes this so satisfying. We don't get heaps of these used in Australia and they cost a fortune brand new, so sort yourself out while it's on offer and hang this on your wall like the piece of art it is.
