Gretsch G6131T-TVP Power Jet, Firebird Red, made in Japan 2009. It's been years since we had one of these Firebird Red Jet models through the store, and holy guacamole, what a treat. The Duo Jet is a classic Gretsch design, pairing a chambered mahogany body with a laminate maple arched top with a set mahogany neck. This is the angrier, more gorgeous version, with a dashing coat of red, a Bigsby tailpiece and a pair of hot TV Jones 'Powertron' pickups. The pickups are a real highlight: they're thicker with more low end than a regular Filtertron, but still offer that singing clarity through the high end. If you're after a guitar that delivers amazing definition with a dirty amp, this will absolutely nail the brief. Every note of a big open chord sings in fierce clarity, it's really quite something. It's awesome for lead stuff too, there's heaps of nuance and complexity on offer that brings a well-delivered line to life. The neck is a comfy, sensible vintage C style profile, and the chambered body means this weighs in a good half kilo less than a normal Les Paul, which makes for a certain ease of play in the hands. The curve of the top paired pops perfectly under the bright red finish, which is complemented by the midnight ebony board and the lightly worn chrome... aw heck, it looks amazing. This is very satisfying guitar indeed.
