Ibanez AR620 Expressionist, black with bling, made in China 2011. This particular model was only made for a couple of years, so it's a quirky one. The Expressionist was a blinged-up take on the classic Artist series, which made serious waves on debut in the eighties. It's like a Les Paul with more. It's LP-like in the set neck, 24.75" scale and the carved maple top on a mahogany body. But, there's more: belly carve, double cutaway and weight relief for comfort, a 'Tri-sound' toggle for more options on each pickup, plus the ebony board, abalone binding, tree of life inlay and cloud tailpiece for some bling. That's a lot to pack in, but it all works together nicely. Tonally, this is full of options. The pickups are approximately PAF-like in voicing, but you can split them to a convincing single coil tone, as well as some other halfway point between the trad HB and single coil tones. That means you can cover Strat-like jangle, LP-like heft and all sorts of other tones without switching guitars. The neck is comfy and quick to move around on, without being impractically skinny, plus the ebony board feels lush under the fingers. Now, all that bling isn't for the faint hearted, so if you're a shy type who prefers to hang at the back of the stage in the dark, maybe leave this one be, but, if you're out to actually attract some attention when you perform... well this can't hurt, right?
