Ibanez John Schofield JSM100, vintage sunburst, made in Japan 2014. John Schofield is certified jazz royalty. He rose to fame playing in Miles Davis' band, but his resume includes playing alongside greats such as Herbie Hancock, Chet Baker, Pat Metheny, Jaco Pastorius and John Mayer... he is among the most important fusion guitarists ever. The JSM model debuted in 2001, as an updated and tweaked version of the AS200 model he had been playing since the 80s. The shape is based loosely on the Gibson 335, but it's a couple of millimeters thinner, with a unique neck design and different timbers. The neck is a fairly slim D shape, carved from resonant African mahogany, capped with a bound ebony fretboard and sporting a cheeky compound radius for maximum playability. The body is a centre-block style semi hollow and made from anigre, an East African tonewood with a gorgeous grain. It feels remarkably alive in the hands, brimming with resonance and built and finished with outstanding precision. The tone on offer is delicious: eloquent highs with a generous shimmer, earthy midrange with a vocal-like dynamic response, singing sustain and a tuneful low end that adds plonk and roundness to big juicy chords. It's excellent for jazz, but will happily cover blues, rock or country without breaking a sweat. Ibanez have long made some of the best semi-hollow electrics guitars available anywhere, and this is a great example of their frightfully high capabilities. Thanks Sco!
