K.Yairi YC80 classical, made in Japan 1984, natural gloss finish. K.Yairi guitars enjoy a loyal and enthusiastic niche following; those 'in the know' rightfully laud these as some of the best made acoustic guitars available anywhere. The more well known Martin style steel strings from this era fetch a small fortune on the global market; being a classical this is a little more niche, but it's equally delightful. Like all Yairi instruments, this guitar was made under the watch of master luthier Kazuo Yairi completely by hand. They import the best tonewoods from all over the planet, and then mill them in house using their own sawmill. They then air dry the wood over several years, instead of more popular rapid kiln drying, for maximum quality. This one is a classic combo for a classical: cedar and rosewood. The snap and brightness on offer is inspiring; there's a lovely crisp definition to each note and strum, balanced by a fullness and richness through the mids and lows. The rosewood on the back and sides is gorgeous, the grain is spectacular. The neck sports a traditional 2" wide ebony board and a typical D shape profile; you can feel the love and care that's gone into the finish and fretwork. If you're after a brilliant classical for a very reasonable dollar, here is a brilliant candidate.
