Maton MS502 Mastersound, deep blue, made in Melbourne Australia in 2002. The Mastersound is an original 1960s design Maton big man Bill May. They enjoyed a huge resurgence in the early 2000s, it seemed every band in Australia was dragging Mastersounds around the country for a while there. This one dates to the middle of that purple patch in 2002. The standard MS500 was a 24.5" scale, whereas this model is the Fender style 25.5" full scale. Combining the longer scale with a pair of humbuckers instead of single coils lends the warm, unassuming Mastersound tone a heap more mids and brightness, so this slices through a mix with a bit more enthusiasm and crunches up more readily. The deep blue finish lets the grain peep through when viewed up close; it's a classy and understated look that hits the cool 60s curves just right. The original case is very plush and a super handy bonus. Maton haven't been making these for a long time and don't look like starting soon, so nabbing a used one in a nice finish and condition is surely a tidy plan.
