Moon Reggae Master, candy apple red, made in Japan around 1986. Moon are a small custom builder based in Tokyo. They rose to prominence in the 1980s when Larry Graham, who more or less invented the slap bass technique, started playing their excellent JJ series basses. They build to order, so if you've got the $3-5k and don't mind waiting the 12+ months, you can spec up a Reggae Master exactly how you want it. The model came out in 1981, this one seems to date to the mid 80s and has some cool custom ordered appointments. I took the neck off to adjust the truss rod (works great) and caught a glimpse under the hood wow, that mahogany body is the real stuff. It's a dark rich red in colour, with detailed tight grain... it's almost a shame this is wearing a solid colour finish. The neck is similarly blessed with an arrow-straight, super tightly grained piece of maple and a dark streaky premium rosewood board. That adds up to plenty of pizzaz in the hands: the neck is fast and smooth and feels very responsive, the body offers plenty of natural zing... the whole thing feels like it was made with a lot of love and purpose. The house-made pickups are great too: the neck pickup is thick and punchy with a bell-like clarity, while the bridge pickup is expansive and gregarious with heaps of complexity and snap. You can split the pickups for single-coil tones too. I'm generally fond of the HH Tele as a genre, but this... just, wow. The bound candy apple finish looks superb too, it's a nice balance of minimalism and flair. You'll love this one all the way to the Moon and back again.
