Psychederhythm Psychomaster GC, burner blue burst, made in Japan 2021. When I saw this one come up for sale in Japan, I had to pull the trigger: this is the coolest guitar I've seen all year. Psychederhythm are a small custom/menu style brand, operating out of a small workshop in Tokyo that also sells a few used and vintage pieces on the side. You can order a custom guitar, but mostly what they do is runs of 2-5 guitars in a particular configuration and finish. They do outstanding finishes: heaps of vibrant metallics, sixties custom colours, matching headstocks, bound tops... all the cool stuff. This example is one of two ever made, and it's pretty special, even for a brand that only does special stuff. First up, the top has a german carve, akin to sixties Mosrite or Guyatone stuff, which looks fantastic. Next up, the super high grade two piece centre joined ash body has been treated with a blowtorch to accentuate the grain lines, like some of the Fender Japan 'charcoal' finishes of the early 90s. The top is bound, but not in plastic: there's a strip of unstained ash around the top finished in a vintage-tinted clear, so you get the grain lines on show in the binding. The body is then stained to a gorgeous two tone blue burst... holy guacamole, it really does look unreasonably stunning. Leaving that aside for now, how does it play and sound? The neck is finished in a sublimely slick satin finish, and carved to an agreeable modern C with a comfy 300mm radius. It's an exemplary piece of maple paired with an attractive piece of dark streaky rosewood... you can tell they handpick their ingredients carefully, and it feels fantastic as a result. The body is fairly light for a solid ash example and offers plenty of natural resonance, plus it feels nice and comfy in the hands. The pickups are by Porter, handmade in the USA with a tasty set of alnico V magnets. They're voiced as a halfway point between a P-90 and a vintage Jazzmaster pickup, so you get a gorgeous chiming snappy treble paired with a complex, punchy midrange. The clean tones on offer are sparkling and rich, with a generous percussive bass response. Into a dirty amp, all that clarity translates to sweet note separation that will sit perfectly on top of a mix. By now you've guessed: I really like this one, it's an outstanding guitar. Psychederhythm stuff is tricky enough to score for a decent dime in Japan, let alone here, so you've definitely only got one shot here... don't miss!
