Walla Walla Maverick, Day of the Dead styling, made in USA 2023. WWGC is the project of luthiers Terry Martin and Ken Melhus, hand building guitars in Walla Walla, very close to the Oregon/Washington border in the picturesque Pacific Northwest of USA. They're very handmade, often using aged and reclaimed timbers, incorporating little oddities like coins and cards and built and finished to a very high standard. They're big on the chambered body, so this has one: it's lightweight and loud unplugged, aided along by a little sound port on the top side. To make they top they use a crystal, which they heat to create a smooth glass style look, encasing the graphics underneath. It's a cool look, certainly something different. The neck is awesome: it's a very soft V, close to a modern C really, with a swish compound radius, modern fairly tall frets and a slick tru-oil finish. The finish feels amazing under the hands, and really lets the flamed maple fretboard do the talking. This feels very classy in the hands: it's similar in feel to Fender Custom Shop or Suhr offerings, it certainly isn't all bling. WWGC make their own bridges, so this has a cool 'Outlaw' high mass cut-for-comfort T-style bridge, and they do their own pickups too, with quirky wood covers. The sound is great. It's very full and fat, with heaps of punch on the low end and a wide, harmonically complex midrange. It's on the more aggressive end of the Tele spectrum, but still has that shimmering clarity through the treble and cleans up beautifully. The Day of the Dead themed look won't be for everyone, but hey: why buy the world's billionth butterscotch Tele, right?
