Yamaha SA-2200 Vintage Sunburst 2002

Yamaha SA-2200 semi-hollow, vintage sunburst, made in Japan 2002. This is a gorgeous guitar, it's such a delight. Yamaha's SA series kicked off in the late 60s and is still available today, and they've enjoyed an excellent reputation the entire time. This one dates to the early 00s and made at Yamaha's flagship Japan operation. The ingredients are top notch: beautifully detailed flamed sycamore on the body, super dark ebony fretboard, tight and consistent mahogany for the neck... holy heck. The burst finish lets the grain do the talking: it catches the light beautifully and rewards a close look. All that gold hardware and fancy inlay work doesn't hurt either, it's a fancy thing. The bound fretboard hides all the fret ends, and the slim D-style shape makes for quick and comfortable movement; it's very easy to play. The pickups are a hi-fidelity take on the classic PAF-style humbuckers, with handy coil split options. In HB mode, they're warm, wide and creamy, great for both jazzy cleans or growly rock sounds. The splits are good too: instant crispy cleans with plenty of chime and balance, without too much volume loss. This is a very enjoyable guitar that will happily cover a whole bunch of different genres with ease and panache. Did you need another reason to love old Yamahas? I didn't, but here we are.
