Yamaha SA700 Super Axe semi-hollow, natural finish, made in Japan 1977. We love vintage Yamaha guitars, and these SA models are some of the best. The 'Super Axe' was Yamaha's take on the Gibson ES335 shape and body style, the SA700 was made from 1976-83. This is meticulously made, the quality and care in the build is really quite outstanding. The neck is round and mildly chunky, it's especially conducive to big, open rhythm parts and feels precise and lively in the hands. Yamaha made their own pickups specially voiced for these models, and they really deliver a lot of tonal bliss: big, sticky lows, harmonious thick mids and a sparkly, clear top. The big body is luxurious to hold and responsive to the touch; it really rings truly with each note played. The natural gloss over maple finish has yellowed beautifully to rich golden brown; the mismatching hue of the mahogany neck serves only to enhance the understated and charming aesthetic. This is lovely, you will love it.

Model: Yamaha Super Axe SA-700
Made: Japan, 1977 (best estimate, serial 001730)
Finish: natural gloss
Body: maple with centre block
Neck: one piece mahogany, rosewood board
Weight: 4.1kg approx
Mods: none
Pickup: original PAF-style covered humbuckers
Case: very basic non-original gig bag

Cosmetic condition notes: mild finish wear. There's some minor dings on the end of the headstock and a couple of very minor nicks in the neck, as well as some play wear on the neck binding. There's some very shallow 'buckle rash' and dimples spread around the back; you can only really see up very close and on exactly the right angle. The front has a couple more notable marks: on the top horn and near the edge in the shoulder area, but it's mostly just a few dimples and light play scratches. The edges have a few marks, most notably up from the top f-hole and around from the knobs.

Playing condition notes: Neck is straight, intonation is good, action is low, truss rod works. All electronics tested and working properly. Frets have some normal wear, they're fairly even with no major buzz issues, 6/10 for life left. Setup with fresh 10/46s.

This listing is an archived entry. We love to look back and remember fondly what characters we've had through the store, so we keep them around for reference.
