Yamaha SC3000 Super Combinator, brown sunburst, made in Japan 1981. The Super Combinator line was Yamaha's way of upping the ante on the Strat-style guitar, launching in the late 70s. This 1981 model has a different setup to the late 70s examples we've had through previously. For a start, it's a gorgeous set neck construction. The smooth slim C neck shape, comfy neck to body join and Gibson-style 24.75" scale make moving up and down the neck extremely easy. As the title suggests, there's a bunch of different tones on deck via some fun switching. The five-way switch delivers some standard Strat-style tones, but the push/push switch on the tone pot adds a passive booster to the mix, adding a heap of girth and punch. There's a lovely balance of classic Strat-spank, with crispy clarity and zest, and SG or Firebird style growl and punch, there's a lot of fun to be had. As with all vintage Yam stuff, the fretwork, finish quality, wood selection and overall build quality is absolutely immaculate, so this has the feel of a brilliantly made guitar with a certain integrity and resonance to it. What a combinatortion!
