Yamaha SR-400 Super R'n'Roller, sunburst finish. This one has some majesty about it. The Super R'N'Roller series was Yamaha's take on the Strat, made briefly around the late seventies. That finish: oh boy, it looks killer. There's barely a ding to show for four decades of play and the gaudy burst fade shows off the thick, tight lines of the sen ash beautifully. The concentric circles in the elbow area kinda look like an eye that stares you down as it hangs on the wall in the shop. The neck is a chunky D style profile, similar to a Fender '57 reissue model, but with a flatter board conducive to big bends. It's a gorgeous piece of maple, there's some tight grain and subtle birds-eye markings and it feels like a million bucks. The tone is spanky: heaps of attack and a warm, assertive midrange with a sparkly jangle on the top... yum. I'm a sucker for these vintage Yamaha guitars, and you know why? It's because they're ace, that's way.
