Greco EG900 Red Sunburst 1979
Greco EG900, made in Japan 1979, red sunburst. Greco kicked off making electric guitars in the early 60s, and by the mid-70s, they were making seriously good stuff. This beauty dates to 1979, right in the thick of their golden era, when they were producing Gibson-style offerings made entirely by hand to a standard USA's finest weren't able to match. In the 1979 catalog, the EG900 was the highest end offering in the LP Standard genre, retailing at ¥90,000, which was a small fortune at the time. It got a couple of deluxe appointments: big kidney bean tuners, an ebony fretboard and a pair of Dimarzio PAF pickups. It's pretty heavy, like many good LPs from this era. But... there's no substitute for quality mahogany, and an unchambered body adds a certain midrange punch and clarity you don't get on a lighter example. The sound is remarkable: the neck pickup cleans up so beautifully you'd be mistaken for thinking it was a Telecaster. The bridge pickup explodes with creamy warmth and harmonic complexity. This would be a perfect recording guitar, it's got so much oomph and clarity that every chord and line springs to life in amazing detail. The plain maple top looks great too, it's simple and classy. You see a fair few EG500s around, but this one is a pretty rare score. If you've been looking for the right Japan vintage LP, this is hard to go past.
