Yamaha SG-3C Flying Banana Orange 1968
Yamaha SG-3C 'Flying Banana', bright orange, made in Japan 1968. These super early Yamaha models are sone of the coolest guitars ever made in Japan in my books. The 'Flying Samurai' model is more common, but these Banana models are deserving of some kudos in their own right: it's rad, basically. The shape was completely original, along with everything else on the guitar: bridge, tremolo, pickups, headstock; everything was made just for this series and took queues from no-one. It's surprisingly comfy to play, even sitting down. The neck is straight and stable with decent frets after all these decades, and it plays smoothly from top to bottom. The pickups deliver a percussive, articulate tone, sitting somewhere in the Jaguar-meets-goldfoil territory. The orange is just perfect: it's the colour of butter chicken, the best food of all. You can get an Eastwood reissue/tribute on this shape these days, even with a microtonal variant; such is the influence of King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard and their stash of modified wonky Yamaha beauties. Original is the best though, right?
