These were Laney's crack at the hybrid tube-preamp-transistor-output idea, similar to the more common Marshall Valvestate. It's a tasty sounding little combo, plenty on clean headroom for a smaller amp and the gain channel does a pretty convincing crunch that sits somewhere between a the Vox chime and the Marshall brashness. Does the job well!
