Bacchus Handmade Series Woodline Ash 4, red oil finish, made in Japan 2009. This is a great example of just how unreasonably good Bacchus can be, and I'm totally here for it. Bacchus Handmade series instruments are made on a small scale in a workshop up the mountains of West Japan. Firstly, it's classy woods: tightly grained rock maple neck, black-as-night ebony fretboard, two-piece centre joined swamp ash body... carefully selected pieces, all carved into shape by hand.; this is the good stuff. The neck feels great to play, it's an intuitive C to D shape and that board feels very luxe. The red oil finish is unusual: usually it's black or brown, but this has a really interesting dark blood red hue, which has aged and rubbed up to a really gorgeous aesthetic. Those wide, distinctive ash grain lines are on full display too. The tone is very strong: clear, expansive high end, paired with a warm and complex midrange with a heaps of kick when you dig in and a plump, tuneful low end. This is an absurdly good bass for the cash, it would surely give a lot of fancy USA made gear at thrice the price a slice and dice... it makes you think twice. So nice.
