Cool Z ZPB-1R, snow white, made in Japan 2011. Cool Z is a house brand for major Japanese instrument chain Shimamura, who have stores all over Japan. They're made at the legendary Fujigen Gakki plant, the very same factory that made all those famous Fender Japan guitars from 1982-96 as well as producing Ibanez Prestige and other tasty biscuits to this day. As such, this is made to a superb standard. It's got a neck that's a bit of a halfway point between a vintage-style Jazz Bass and vintage Precision, so it's a slim, rounded profile without being too skinny. Between the easy neck and the lightweight body, it's very cooperative and fun to play. It's well balanced and naturally resonant, it just feels good. The tone is classic P: heaps of thump and punch in the attack, a weighty rounded low end and a growly, assertive midrange. Between the alder body, bone nut and spiral bridge, this is pretty handy on the spec sheet, but the real magic is found when it's in your hands. I've got a working theory the correct pronunciation for the brand name is "coolzie-coolzie-coolzies"... more to come.
