Epiphone Lacquer Series SG, gloss cherry, made in Japan 2008. When you know, you know. These were made for just a couple of years and sold to the Japan domestic market. The were produced at the famed Fujigen plant and blessed with a thin finish with a classy nitro topcoat. Somehow, this is perfectly weighted, despite weighing in under 3kg... such is the mystery. The quality of wood selection and craftsmanship on board is immediately obvious in the hands; this feels better than any Gibson branded SG I've ever played. The neck is a fairly chunky typical '61 style shape, which absolutely adds to the vibe and tone. The finish looks super luxurious, it's got that particular sheen to it that radiates understated charm. It's naturally loud unplugged, but the real magic comes when you plug it in. There's a certain percussive quality to the attack, it's immediate and convincing. The midrange is extraordinarily wide and complex; it responds beautifully to the touch and moves from a growl to a birdsong with grace and confidence. You might've gleaned by now that I really, really like this one. You will also like it I'd wager.
