Fender Japan JB75-US Jazz Bass, ocean turquoise, made in Japan 2007-10. Is it the best looking bass we've had all year? It's certainly a strong contender. The 70s era Jazz Bass had some cool appointments: ash body, bound fretboard, block inlays, bold logos, a bullet truss adjuster, a U shaped neck and slightly backwards-shifted pickups, so this beauty was blessed accordingly to match. The neck is a little more square and a bit fatter than the more common JB62 models, but it feels very reassuring in the hands. The rosewood on the board is a gorgeous piece too, so nice. The ash body and USA pickups make for a bright, vibrant take on the Jazzy growl: defined, clear and immediate, with a plump low end and heaps of snap and punch in the midrange. Now, that finish: just, wow. It's a little beat up, but the combo of the tort, dark rosewood, binding and blocks, matching head, and the gorgeous rich oceanic green make for a bass so beautiful all your friends will want to quit guitar and steal it. Go away, Cameron!
