Gibson SG Standard P-90, black, made in USA 2012. Back in the 2000s, Gibson did a number of limited runs for the Japan market, with interesting finishes or unique specs etc. This fun little character was one of those limited models, as you couldn't get an SG Standard with P-90s at the time. It means you the swish Standard appointments: crown inlay and mother-of-pearl logo, bound fretboard with fre-nibs, trapezoid inlays, 4-ply batwing guard and an ABR-1 bridge, but gone are the 490 humbuckers and in their place are some glorious P-90s. The sound is awesome: the neck pickup is still dark and gooey, but it's got heaps of attack and a vocal-esque clarity, while the bridge pickup is mile-wide mids and shimmering highs with heaps of complexity and punch. The body is nice and light at 3.1kg, but it still balances well and doesn't dive towards the neck in the hands. The neck is a moderate rounded shape, not super skinny but not as fat as a trad '61 style, which paired with the comfy curves and sturdy hardware makes for a really enjoyable feel in the hands. The black, pearl and chrome hit the curves of the body perfectly, it's looks sleek and mean without taking itself too seriously. I love this one, it's so fun!
